Service Manifest # 1
Solo exhibition at Astrid Noack’s Atelier
Re-Enactment of Mierle Laderman Ukeles “Maintenance Art Maniest” from 1969, video, walltext, drawings, proposal for a public sculpture of Astrid Noacks’ Floor.
After working for several years on various economic models and formats, the hidden economies I was exploring increasingly began to point to myself as an artist, and my broader living circumstances as I balanced life as an artist in a precarious economic situation and the role of mother and caregiver. I began to regard these conditions as artistic material, thereby discussing issues surrounding the rooted dichotomies of society, such as work / non-work, value / no value, paid work / unpaid work.
My contribution to Astrid Noack’s Atelier takes hold of the act of creating artistic value and points to the artist as the value-creating individual. The work reflects the constant struggle to balance life as an artist with the expectations and pressures of caregiving. Thus, the work points to social and representative value systems.
